Fortune Drips: Art Inspired by the Wisdom of Chinese Takeout

It Came to Me in a Dream…

It didn’t, that’d be hilarious.

Dreaming about beef lo-mein takeout is how I spend most lunch hours, I don’t need to have it occupying time in my sleep. The real inspiration from this collection came from the process of creating poured paintings.

Surrendering Control Allows Freedom

As a writer, poured paintings struck me because you can have the steadiest hand, the best mix, everything just right, but if your flip, turn, release, or movement of the paint on the canvas is off, it’s going to affect the final product.

No do-overs, no takebacks, every time, first try, no warm-up.

In essence, it’s nothing like writing.

Going into a creative endeavor, knowing that at one point you’ll have to subscribe to que será, será can help you to see that it’s more important to have work done, than it is to have work that’s perfect.

And even if it is perfect, guess what? You still have to get over it because you can’t recreate it. This isn’t an piccrew algorithm NFT, or something that can be mass produced. The paints, the mixes, the colors, and ultimately the hand that makes the pour will never be an exact match again. Every poured painting is a true 1:1.

It’s freeing in a way that I think would help a lot of other artists to see projects as projects rather than the “end all be all”.

How Do Fortune Cookies Come Into Play?

Hard to say, I knew I wanted to add something to the poured paintings though. A handful of months back I started saving the fortunes from takeout orders, and it just sort of clicked for me.

I liked the fact that like a poured painting, I wasn’t in control of the fortunes I’d receive, and it felt like a natural match.
