The first contemporary rapper I remember hearing and thinking, “He doesn’t sound like anyone else.” was Danny Brown on his XXX album. Not only did I think no one else sounded like him, but maybe more importantly, I didn’t think anyone else could adopt his style.
The second time was listening to Bruiser Wolf’s debut album, Dope Game Stupid.
Bruiser Wolf has a style that blends elements of James Brown showmanship and ad-libbing over loop-heavy beats peppered with samples, and an absolutely relentless onslaught of punchlines that sometimes carry entire songs.
Some of my personal highlights from the album are: I’m A Instrument (featuring Danny Brown!), Use Me (I’m Dope), Middle Men, and Momma Was A Dope Fiend. MWADF ends the album, and also shows that Brusier Wolf’s unique style can handle unflinchingly difficult subject matter.
Listen to the one of one sound of Bruiser Wolf’s debut album Dope Game Stupid for yourself wherever you get your music.
